A vibrant natural copper carbonate with distinctive banding patterns, malachite has served as a premier green pigment since ancient times. Favored by Egyptian artisans for cosmetics and Renaissance masters for panel painting, this mineral remained Europe's dominant green until the 18th century. Its chemistry mirrors azurite's, yet with higher water content, yielding a yellowish-green cast in oil media while maintaining permanence in fresh fresco applications and tempera work. Our Eastern Congolese source undergoes meticulous hand-separation, crushing, grinding, and levigation—methods rooted in classical European and Chinese traditions—to refine the raw ore and enhance pigment purity. The result is a finely ground, sieved powder showcasing malachite's characteristic striations.
