While physicists may exclude black and white from the spectrum of "true colors," they remain vital to visual perception. White is achieved through total light reflection, a feat dominated in the modern era by the nearly 100% opacity of Titanium White, alongside variants like Zinc or Kremer White. Conversely, black occurs when light is absorbed, typically using carbon or mineral pigments like Bone Black.
The human eye is remarkably sensitive to the gray axis—the gradient formed by mixing these two extremes—allowing us to detect the subtlest nuances. Interestingly, when blacks are derived from structured materials like wood, the charred remnants of organic patterns (such as annual rings) can still catch the light, creating visible reflections within the darkness.
