Gum Arabic, historically known as Acacia Gum, is a natural, water-soluble resin harvested from the sap of the Acacia tree. Revered for centuries as the traditional binder for watercolors and gouache, it provides a transparent, stable vehicle that adheres pigment securely to paper while imparting a subtle, natural gloss.

Preparation & Dissolving:
Gum Arabic is highly soluble in both cool and warm water, though utilizing warm water will significantly accelerate the process. For a standard binder solution, combine 1 part dry Gum Arabic with 2 parts heated (not boiling) distilled water. Stir the mixture gently to prevent excessive air bubbles and allow it to sit. The gum requires time to fully hydrate and dissolve; while warm water speeds this up, it is normal for the solution to take several hours or even overnight to become completely uniform and syrupy. Strain through a fine mesh or cheesecloth before use to remove any natural bark impurities.
