The visual impact of pearl luster pigments changes based on the background color. On light surfaces their effect is subtle; against dark grounds their reflective properties intensify dramatically.

These colors can be used full strength to add sharp, shining details. Alternatively, they can be used very delicately mixed with another color- like a bit of Star Gold added to Yellow Ochre. The neutral silver/white pearl lusters can also be used a "base" to make a pearly version of any color. 

To prevent shimmery "contamination" to other colors, you may want to use a dedicated rinse-water jar exclusively for pearlescent paints.
