Like their yellow counterparts, red ochres are natural mineral composites and among the most ubiquitous colored earths on the planet. Used continuously since the dawn of human history, ochres were featured in prehistoric cave paintings alongside bone black, charcoal, and natural chalk. Across cultures, they became staple pigments for fine art, architecture, and body paint, valued for their accessibility and exceptional permanence.
The characteristic hue of red ochre stems primarily from hematite (dehydrated iron oxide), often called "blood ore." Raw deposits frequently display striking bands of yellow, orange, or white minerals mixed alongside the primary red matrix. This particular variety, sourced from Midelt in central Morocco, yields an exceptionally warm, vibrant red hue.
