Chrome Oxide Green is a warm, slightly olive-tinted hue of green.

First discovered in the late 18th century and widely introduced to artists' palettes around 1862, Chrome Oxide Green (PG 17) quickly became celebrated as one of the most permanent and indestructible greens available to painters. Before its creation, artists struggled with botanical greens that were either highly toxic or notoriously prone to fading, making this exceptionally stable, opaque, and lightfast pigment a revolutionary addition. It is so chemically stable and resistant to the elements that it was heavily relied upon for military camouflage during World War II, as it perfectly mimics the infrared reflectance of natural foliage. Today, this dense, earthy olive-green remains a historically significant and indispensable "workhorse" pigment, prized by creators for its natural, muted tone and unmatched durability across all mediums.
